We had fruity drinks with umbrellas, another birthday (quietly) celebrated, a cheesecake donut (iykyk), the official Book Fiesta playlist, an international guest, explosions of color, and a sea of laughter.

Thanks to the (almost) always delightful @bookartstudios , who brought her trademark joy, support, and creativity. She has become a good friend and I'll miss her until she returns!

Book Fiesta 2026 Session 1 has come to a close and Book Fiesta 2026 Session 1 has come to a close and I'm tired, but grateful. It was a full session with two birthday celebrations, a surprise guest, numerous trips to @theperagrill, some margaritas, painted hands, an ice cream run, and a ton of paper and gesso. I'm so appreciative of @bookartstudios and her generous spirit, as well as the creative brilliance of our attendees. Off to get some sleep before we welcome session 2!

Happy experiments and accidents! There is somethin Happy experiments and accidents! There is something so satisfying about brushing ink and dye onto paper. I had a few play sessions recently where I just brushed/spritzed each sheet of paper with color, then stacked them in a foil tray to dry. Some of it came out as I expected, and some of it left me surprised in the very best way. [In full disclosure, one batch stuck together in a clump and is waiting for me to have the patience to soak and unclump it!]

I hope you have some magical making days ahead! It doesn't have to be fancy, it just needs to bring you joy.

I have a friend who is going through a tough life I have a friend who is going through a tough life transition, so I made her a little keychain to remind her that she's got this. She's moving to a horse farm, so this makes extra sense.

I know a lot of my friends/family sort of glaze over when I mention the lasers, but being able to make a small, custom pick-me-up for someone on the fly is something I really enjoy.

This is on the xTool Ultra UV (again). I am still learning how to choose the starting settings. I think the text could have used one more pass and I think the file I used for the horse was... not great... but I still really love the final result.

One of my biggest values when teaching is encouraging students to try out their ideas and iterate on them. If you don't like the first result, it's not a failure. You figure out how to fix the parts you don't like and try again. And you keep doing it until you're happy with the results. I think the education most adults received taught us the opposite of that. It was right or wrong and that was that. Luckily I think that's changing. In the meantime, many of us have to re-learn how to "fail" without feeling like failures. [I'll point out now that I am not wallowing or nitpicking at my results. I'm looking with a critical eye, so I can make changes for the future. This is the iterative process!]

In fact, I think this is something my friend is grappling with. So, it's a message for all of us - take off the training wheels and don't be afraid to fall (fail?). Doing your own thing, following your own path, going solo, etc., is scary and hard. Do it anyway.
