I have a friend who is going through a tough life I have a friend who is going through a tough life transition, so I made her a little keychain to remind her that she's got this. She's moving to a horse farm, so this makes extra sense.

I know a lot of my friends/family sort of glaze over when I mention the lasers, but being able to make a small, custom pick-me-up for someone on the fly is something I really enjoy.

This is on the xTool Ultra UV (again). I am still learning how to choose the starting settings. I think the text could have used one more pass and I think the file I used for the horse was... not great... but I still really love the final result.

One of my biggest values when teaching is encouraging students to try out their ideas and iterate on them. If you don't like the first result, it's not a failure. You figure out how to fix the parts you don't like and try again. And you keep doing it until you're happy with the results. I think the education most adults received taught us the opposite of that. It was right or wrong and that was that. Luckily I think that's changing. In the meantime, many of us have to re-learn how to "fail" without feeling like failures. [I'll point out now that I am not wallowing or nitpicking at my results. I'm looking with a critical eye, so I can make changes for the future. This is the iterative process!]

In fact, I think this is something my friend is grappling with. So, it's a message for all of us - take off the training wheels and don't be afraid to fall (fail?). Doing your own thing, following your own path, going solo, etc., is scary and hard. Do it anyway.

Had a lovely meeting a couple of weeks back with t Had a lovely meeting a couple of weeks back with the awesome women at @creativechaosemporium. I picked up 6 yards of this gorgeous fabric for next to nothing (I think it's going to be perfect for bookcloth), along with a pretty little wooden box that I have big plans for!

Art reuse shops aren't necessarily an easy business model, but they are so important. There are always people getting rid of creative supplies and other people who want them! Definitely make a visit to Creative Chaos Emporium - you never know what goodies you might find.

Someday I hope to be able to accept and redistribute gently used art supplies at @indigo_whimsy_studio, but in the meantime, I'm looking forward to finding ways to partner with Creative Chaos Emporium. Good creative people doing good creative things...

I made this hidden compartment box for a raffle do I made this hidden compartment box for a raffle donation last weekend. The original pattern is from @bepvangasteren (thank you!). I'm still tweaking it to make it my own with some specific features and possibly make it a bit bigger, but I cut all of the bookboard on the F2 Ultra UV and I'm excited to make a final template so I can cut the boards whenever I'm ready to make a box or teach a class.

It also reminded me that I need to replenish my book cloth selection...

I'm so enamored with this lovely Nagomi Jizo statu I'm so enamored with this lovely Nagomi Jizo statue from the Hasedera temple in Kamakura, Japan. It's on my list for a visit when I return. In the meantime, I was playing around with embossing and engraving on the xTool Ultra UV laser. I'm still learning how to best prep my files, but what really strikes me about this is those tiny little wooden pieces, not the slightest bit burned. After years of working with lasers, this still blows my mind.

I need to hunt down some better wood. These keychains are fine for basic engraves, but the grain is too prominent on the deeper embosses. If I pull off a better engrave of this sweet, smiling trio, I'll definitely post it!

On Friday, I was back at @sanbornmillsfarm for Nat On Friday, I was back at @sanbornmillsfarm for Natural Dye Day. We had some gorgeous colors to combat the cold, gray, rainy weather.

Last year, I screwed up my mordanting, and got some truly awful results. Thankfully, I got it right this year and I'm really happy with my fabric. In a sea of natural dyers, I'm a bit of a rogue, so I was experimenting with eco-printing/bundle dyeing with dye blankets. I only had eucalyptus and rose petals, but I got some amazing results. These were not your perfectly-transferred leaves and petals (which I love, of course, but aren't what I was going for this time). These are rough and textured and really organic. I'll share more once they are dry, but these are logwood and madder prints, including some paper I added to the blankets. There's also a cochineal piece and a cosmos piece.

I consider myself to be a bit of a chaotic artist and sometimes I'm sensitive about that in a sea of perfectionists. One of the attendees told me on her way out that she enjoyed watching me work because I didn't seem as inhibited (paraphrased). It was sweet of her and really appreciated. It's the approach I take in situations like that to avoid feeling self-concious and overwhelmed.

Anyway, shout out to @saragoodmanfiberstudio and @adventuringsmiths for hosting us and supporting our creativity the day of.

Speaking of family, last weekend I hosted this awe Speaking of family, last weekend I hosted this awesome group for a papermaking workshop. They brought the wine, lots of laughs, and some serious creativity to the table.

If you're looking for a unique way to gather with friends and/or family, we've got you covered. We'll find an activity you can all enjoy, while still being able to chat with each other. No painting skills required!

Our (xTool) family has grown by one! We just added Our (xTool) family has grown by one! We just added the xTool F2 Ultra UV so we can cut and engrave glass, among other things. Since the F2U UV doesn't char like other lasers, I'm excited to test it this week on book board and felt. It would be incredible to do those without any charring.

I mentioned a couple of months ago that buying my first xTool laser "changed my life." It sounds kind of dramatic, but it prompted me to join the xTool Squad as a Demo Room Host. I'm able to share my love of tech with others and it's something I have been missing. It reminded me that I didn't need to choose between art and tech. I can share my love of both things. And so that's what I'm doing! If you're interested in a demo of either machine (in person or online), you can go to https://tinyurl.com/xToolDemo or visit the link in my bio. If you don't see a time that works for you, drop me a DM, and we can find something that works.

Sometimes it feels like you need to be one thing or another thing and, especially as someone with ADHD, that can feel stifling. But usually with a little creativity, you can find ways to integrate different parts of who you are into your life plan.

Travel and Accommodations

Brown vintage suitcase with a vintage camera on top.

We are still working on our travel information. Please reach out if you need assistance with your plans.

For reference, Indigo Whimsy is in Tewksbury, MA. It’s about halfway between Logan International Airport and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (Manchester, NH). Both airports are 30-45 minutes away in little to moderate traffic.

We are accessible from both airports by taxi/Uber/Lyft. Plan on $75-$100.

You can take the commuter rail (Lowell Line) from North Station (via the “T” or subway, Blue line inbound to Green line outbound) and catch a taxi/Uber/Lyft from there to save a bit of money.

It is possible to take the Logan Express (bus) and transfer several times, but you’ll have to figure that one out on your own.
